Healing Circle: For Women, Trans and Non-Binary Folx of Asian Descent

Monday March 22, 6:30pm (Eastern)

Sisters, siblings and friends: Have you eaten yet?

I spent the better part of last week grieving. What kept me going was knowing I had people who were doing the same work while also grieving. We’ve seen each other through past incidents of racism and discrimination whether it was against us or someone else. Myself and Sokunthary Svay welcome you to come as you are. This is a free zoom event.

AGENDA:

A moment of silence for lives lost

Ten minute guided qi gong practice

Check-ins: share pronouns, tell us how you’re doing

Safety and Self-Defense Presentation by Monica Liu

Writing Exercise: lead by Sokunthary Svay

Share back: (only if you want to!)

Closing: Share resources, ask each other for what you need, connect, exchange info, create, support.

Sokunthary Svay was born in a refugee camp in Thailand shortly after her parents fled Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. They were sponsored to come to the United States and resettled in the Bronx where she grew up. She is currently poetry editor for Newtown Literary, the only literary journal for the borough of Queens. A founding member of the Cambodian American Literary Arts Association (CALAA), she has received fellowships from the American Opera Project, Poets House, Willow Books, and CUNY, as well as commissions from Washington National Opera, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, and ISSUE Project Room. In addition to publishing a poetry collection, Apsara in New York (Willow Books, 2017), Svay has had her writing anthologized and performed by actors and singers. Svay’s first opera, Woman of Letters, set by composer Liliya Ugay, received its world premiere at the Kennedy Center in January 2020 as part of the American Opera Initiative. She teaches English at Queens College, CUNY.

Monica Liu is a Chinatown resident. She has over 10 years of experience in Martial Arts and specializes in weapons.
