SELF, COMMUNITY, NATION: Health Justice in the Wake of Anti-Asian Violence April 18 (Online)

Workshop for East Asian Medical Practitioners Sunday, April 18 & April 25

A Mass Shooting On Three Asian Businesses in Atlanta left 8 dead. 6 were Asian Women. About 3800 incidents of Anti-Asian hate and bias incidents were reported between March 2020-Feb 28, 2021.

Attacks on Asians are just one symptom of white supremacy and, anti-Asian rhetoric that has long existed in this country. The Paige Act of 1875, The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Japanese Internment camps from 1942-1945 are historical evidence of xenophobia and discrimination of Asian Americans.

Historically, Chinatowns, Koreatowns and Japantowns were built to exclude Asian Americans from mainstream society. Today, these communities are thriving and up until recently, a safe haven for Asian Americans. As the COVID-19 crisis continues to rip through our country, Asian Americans are increasingly becoming targets of assaults and violence. White supremacy is not mysterious but it is very strategic.

How does this affect us as acupuncturists?

As acupuncturists we practice a branch of East Asian Medicine (EAM). To even consider acupuncture separate from EAM is problematic. It is an attempt to erase its roots, and it is an act of white supremacy. We practice a holistic medicine where the roots of the medicine ask us to see ourselves as a part of a whole. Are we really doing that by ignoring the growing violence against Asian people? The roots of our medicine come from Asia. If we do not recognize the people, how can we practice the medicine?

I, Dr. Emily Grace Siy would like you to join myself and Dr. Tamsin Lee and Dr. Paige Yang for an important conversation on SELF, COMMUNITY, NATION: Health Justice in the Wake of Anti-Asian Violence.

April 18, 3pm PST, 6pm EST on ZOOM

April 25 recorded event STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

In this interactive community workshop led by Asian American licensed acupuncturists, we will explore anti-Asian policies, micro— and macro aggressions, and systematic racism in academic institutions and professional organizations. Participants will learn how to incorporate anti-racist activism as a clinician, student and educator with powerful actionable steps towards cultural humility and health justice liberation.

The 1.5 hour workshop is led by Dr. Tamsin Lee (Influential Point), Dr. Emily Siy and Dr. Paige Yang (Yang Face) who will share their expertise as a researcher, clinician, solopreneur and Asian American community leaders. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to CAAV Organizing Asian Communities, a small grassroots organization founded in 1986 by Asian working class women.
