Do’s and Dont’s of Getting Acupuncture

Don’t change the environment of your body drastically after acupuncture (no shower, no swimming, no hot tub, no sauna right after acupuncture. Wait a few hours before showering, wait til the next day for swimming, sauna, hot tubs if you can!

Do keep the body warm and cozy by dressing in layers, having a scarf on hand, keeping the neck, back, abdomen and feet warm

Don’t drink alcohol or take other substances after acupuncture

Do take it easy and make time for rest

Don’t drink iced drinks or cold foods

Do eat warm foods, drink hot teas and room temperature water

Don’t disrespect the culture you’re benefitting from by asking if ‘it works’. East Asian Medicine has stood the test of time and is practiced in many countries!

Do ask respectful questions, be curious and be open

Don’t expect acupuncture to magically work when you don’t follow your treatment plan

Do come in for consistent visits, at the frequency that is suggested by your acupuncturist

Don’t eat spicy, greasy or heavy foods after acupuncture

Do eat foods that are warm, nourishing light and easy to digest foods

Don’t work out right after acupuncture

Do meditate or journal after —your creative juices are flowing at this time!

Don’t come to acupuncture on an an empty stomach

Do make sure to eat a light snack or meal beforehand to avoid getting dizzy or light headed

Don’t drink coffee or have a lot of caffeine after acupuncture as it can affect the environment of your body and your nervous system!

Do hydrate well before and after receiving acupuncture, cupping and other types of bodywork

Don’t try to be your own herbalist! Sometimes buying herbs off the internet is not the best way to self treat

Do seek individualized care and herbal prescriptions from your trusted acupuncturist
